Single-Weapon System: Forging, Transformations, and Iron-Sword Builds

Watchman Development Notes02 / DEVLOG

A single iron sword carries the full game, while forging, transformations, scabbards, and whetstones preserve build depth.

Most Soulslikes create combat variety through a large selection of weapons. Watchman retains one iron sword and carries it through the full game.

The decision is not intended to reduce system depth. It concentrates progression in a single weapon and relocates build variation to forging, transformations, and modular equipment.

Rationale for a single weapon

Maintaining one weapon means that work on combat feel, animation, and balance continues to accumulate on the same weapon module.

A multi-weapon system requires multiple animation sets, balance curves, and sets of control feedback. In a solo project, that requirement disperses production resources considerably. Concentrating on one sword instead allows continued adjustment of startup frames, individual swings, and hit feedback, exchanging systemic breadth for mechanical depth.

Relocating build diversity

Removing the armoury does not remove differences in play. Watchman transfers its build space to three levels.

1. Forging: upgrades and skill-slot expansion

Forging progression

The iron sword can be forged to +15. Forging increases base values and also unlocks skill slots: +5 opens the second slot, +10 opens the third, and +15 enables the transformation stage. Higher weapon levels therefore support a more complete combination of techniques.

2. Transformations: five combat orientations

At +15, the iron sword can take one of five forms: Balanced, Keen, Fire, Frost, or Lightning. The two physical forms change the operating profile: Balanced emphasizes stability, while Keen exchanges survivability for higher output. The three elemental forms provide distinct attribute matchups. The category of weapon remains constant; its combat orientation changes.

3. Scabbards and whetstones: style and attribute modification

Two modular slots extend the build further. The scabbard determines the combat style, granting a defining technique and allowing mechanics associated with other weapon types to be incorporated. A Pressure Scabbard, for example, gives the iron sword a greatsword-style charged swing. The whetstone modifies attributes, changing scaling or adding properties such as critical or backstab bonuses.

Maintenance benefits of the single-weapon system

The complete build is formed by forging × transformation × scabbard × whetstone. Players retain a meaningful combination space, while development maintains only one core weapon module. Every animation and feel adjustment continues to improve the same sword. For a solo project, this is an important trade-off in maintaining combat quality.

Special form: Black Flame

Black Flame: a purely offensive form assumed by the iron sword under specific conditions

Beyond the standard system, the sword has a special form: Black Flame. Under a specific condition of extreme danger, the iron sword ignites with black fire and becomes a purely offensive greatsword that cannot block. Survival consequently shifts from defence to rolling and damage timing. The loss of blocking is both the cost of the transformation and its defining property.

The trigger and narrative basis of Black Flame will be documented later with the story design. The single weapon therefore preserves operational continuity while still creating a distinct state at a critical stage.
